Happy new piercing!
Initial Aftercare
One of the first things you’ll likely notice after getting a piercing is redness and swelling around the area. You may also see small drops of blood and a clear or pale yellowish fluid—this is called lymph. Lymph plays a key healing role by protecting the body from harmful substances and toxins that could cause infection.
Nothing to worry about—in fact, quite the opposite! Everything is going according to plan.
And even though you’ll feel a strong urge to touch the area—don’t!
After leaving the studio, your first priority is to clean the piercing within the next hour. It’s important to clean it regularly and not let blood or lymph dry out and form crusts.
What You’ll Need
-
For your hands: antibacterial soap
-
For cleaning and treating the piercing: STUFF Aftercare Piercing Spray
-
For applying the spray: cotton swabs
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Wash your hands thoroughly!
-
Using a cotton swab soaked with the spray, gently clean both sides of the piercing, removing any dried blood and lymph.
-
Then, carefully move the jewelry back and forth to clean the inside as well. It’s important that no lymph gets trapped inside, as this may irritate the wound and cause infection.
-
Repeat this process 3–4 times a day for two weeks. During the second week, 3 times a day will usually be enough—as long as everything is healing normally and you maintain good hygiene.
What About Showering?
Unfortunately—it’s unavoidable! But avoid spending too much time in the shower—be quick.
To protect the piercing from complications, apply a thick layer of antiseptic cream to seal the wound before showering.
Let’s be clear: swimming pools, saunas, the sea, lakes, and rivers are strictly prohibited during the first two weeks in order to avoid infection.
Essential Tips
-
Keep the area clean and dry for the first two weeks
-
Avoid touching the piercing with your hands
-
Be careful when changing clothes—fabric may catch on the jewelry
-
If you have a facial or ear piercing and long hair, it’s better to tie your hair back
-
Avoid tight clothing and irritating fabrics that may rub the area
Tongue Piercing
As you can imagine, most of the advice above doesn’t quite apply to a tongue piercing.
For this type, it’s best to use medicated mouthwash with an active ingredient (e.g., Chlorhexidine).
The routine is similar:
-
Week 1: rinse 5 times a day
-
Week 2: rinse 3 times a day
Additional tips for oral aftercare:
-
Use a new toothbrush
-
Stick to soft foods
-
Avoid anything hot, spicy, salty, acidic, bitter, or strongly flavored
-
Alcohol and carbonated drinks are strictly prohibited
-
It’s recommended to reduce smoking as well
In Case of Complications
It’s completely normal for the pierced area to be red and swollen during the first 2–3 days. These are not necessarily signs of infection, and with proper care, symptoms should resolve quickly.
However, if the redness and swelling don’t subside by day three, or if you’re unsure whether the piercing is healing properly, don’t hesitate to contact us for a consultation.
The earlier an inflammatory process is caught, the easier it is to treat.
